3:17am. So one of the fun things about living in India and in Chennai is the truth that anything can happen at any time (and usually does). Even including a parade going down your street, at full volume, at 3am. Making their way to the nearby temple down my street, this procession included a harmonium at full, over-amped volume, followed by a 12-piece marching band complete with trumpets and drums - very energetic drums - then this float with the deity inside all lit up like the sun and then a trailing generator that sounded like a jet aircraft. And all stopped and dancing right in front of my flat. You really had to laugh because why wouldn't there be a parade at 3am? And because parades, despite the hour and the terrible over-amping wall of noise, are inherently fun things. When it first started up, there was such a racket and so much wattage of light streaming in the windows it looked like a UFO was landing. Which probably would have surprised me less. :-) My only complaint is that I never know what the celebrations and observances are for. With the diversity of sects and gods to pray to, unless you are specifically part of that temple, most of my colleagues seem generally unhelpful in being able to tell me why this temple has ben playing music for 5 days or why that temple has had a parade to it today. I love the complexity of the Hindu religion, the small community of it, but it is hard to absorb without the right guide. |
