Chennai has a overhead metro rapid transit line running now. Amazing and along the line, very convenient. But it was rife with delays and corruption (according to the papers and general sentiment) and while the trains are now running the full length, the stations and surrounding roads and development have yet to be done in any meaningful way. The stations are hulking concrete things which empty and unfinished as they are have a post-apocalyptic feel to them like zombies from 28 Days Later or Aussie punk bikers could jump out at any moment. But I don't want to just be negative. I assume the stations and access roads and parking facilities will be complete one day and the lower levels filled with shops (or something at least) and the stations will bustle with commuters. And thankfully I haven't heard reports of lurking zombies or bikers. I don't want to deride Chennai's achievements and potential; but things do take an inordinate amount of time and issues to build and I echo the locals' unhappiness with how poorly they are managed. But at least we have a line. 2 or 3 more and we might actually make a dent in the traffic. One can only hope. The overhead line does also give a pretty view of the city above the trees and busy streets one normally doesn't get. |
