Description
English: This 1961 one shilling denomination of the special postage stamp (colour brown, blue and olive), issued to commemorate independence and with the subject of 'Maternity'. One of the nurses there, Mary Mzinga, the daughter of Massy Swynnerton's secretary Stephen Mzinga, was honoured in an unusual way before she left for advanced training in England; showning her presenting a new born infant to the proud mother. All these occured at the Maternity wing of the Hospital, which some years previously had been funded with 35.000£ by Christos Galanos. The GALANOS inscription, is barely visible at the facade of the building (between the windows of the 2nd. and the 3rd. floor), thus honouring the benefactor.
