Title |
Incomplete cast silver post-medieval seal matrix, close up die view |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete post-medieval silver seal matrix. The die is oval and shows the negative design of a galleon with three masts and front and rear castles with waves beneath. This is surrounded by a beaded border. There is no lettered inscription. The shaft is six sided and would have terminated in a loop, possibly trefoil, which is now missing. The break edges are worn smooth suggesting this damage occurred in antiquity. Directly below the position of the loop is a moulded oval collar, with a grooved line running around its circumference. The reverse of the die face is stamped twice with a maker’s mark ‘AS’. The object has a silvery patina with patches of black oxidisation. The die is 18.4mm long and 15.34mm wide. The overall length of the matrix is 17.34mm. It weighs 4.08g. |
