Title
Incomplete cast copper alloy Jew’s harp of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 – AD 1800). Drawing: Frank Basford.
Description
English: Incomplete cast copper alloy Jew's harp of Post Medieval date (AD 1500 - AD 1800). Length 51mm, maximum width 27mm and maximum thickness 5mm. Weight 7.67g.

The lyre-shaped instrument has a sub-circular head (as viewed in plan) which is about 27mm in diameter. It is a flattened oval shape in cross-section. The tapering arms are both about 26mm in length and are characteristically lozenge-shaped in cross-section. One arm is slightly bent from its original alignment. At the apex of the head, on the front face, are two raised square mouldings which form a rabbet, 2mm in width. There are parallel linear grooves wihtin the rabbet, possibly file marks. The rabbet accommodated the missing tongue which was probably made of iron as there is a small deposit of iron staining within the rabbet. Faint traces of file marks are visible on both arms. The instrument has a light green patina although there is superficial corrosion in places.
