Title
Incomplete Papal Bulla
Description
English: The back face of a medieval lead papal bulla with the inscription in relief +/NICO/LAVS/PPV, with a n with a tail extending from the lower point of each upright above PP.
The reverse, now worn, has been smoothed off. This could well be the result of detachment of the cord which fastened it to the document breaking up the front surface.
Nick Griffiths comments "There is some evidence that bullae were kept as souvenirs once the document had been removed, perhaps to use the Papal name as a good luck charm, a bit like pilgrim souvenirs".
Nicholas V was Pope from 6th March 1447 to 24th March 1455.
Measures 37mm in diameter, 2.5mm thick and weighs 17.77g.
