Title |
Incomplete Early medieval tweezers |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of copper alloy tweezers. This fragment represents one arm of the original object. The arm is truncated below the position of the bend or loop and has a flat, horizontal break edge. This end is worn smooth suggesting damage occurred in antiquity. The arm flares from 4.86mm to 8.8mm at the grasping edge. At this end, the arm is turned at approximately 90 degrees under itself to form the pincer edge . The top of the tweezers is slightly wasted. It is decorated in the wasted portion with two vertical incised lines. Above the wasted portion is one incised line. Immediately below the wasted portion are three vertical incised lines, then a gap of approximately 5mm and then a further two incised vertical lines. Otherwise the tweezer arm is plain. The reverse is entirely plain. The object has an even mid green patina, and despite being incomplete survives in good condition. The object has a length of 44.42mm, is 1.8mm thick and weighs 3.67g. MacGregor and Bolick, 1993, have a number of examples of tweezers with similarly incised decoration, which might suggest this object is of Early Medieval date as opposed to Roman. |
