of course, directed our searches andinquiries particularly to this point, but did not find anypieces of iron or other metal, nor could we hear of anyhaving ever been found there. Don Miguel had a col-lection of chay or flint stones, cut in the shape of ar-row-heads, which he thought, and Don Miguel was nofool, were the instruments employed. They were suf-ficiently hard to scratch into the stone. Perhaps bymen accustomed to the use of them, the whole of thesedeep relief ornaments might have been scratched, butthe chay stones themselves looked as if they had beencut by metal. The engraving opposite represents the altar as itstands before the last monument. It is seven feetsquare and four feet high, richly sculptured on all itssides. The front represents a deaths head. The topis sculptured, and contains grooves, perhaps for thepassage of the blood of victims, animal or human, offer-ed in sacrifice. The trees in the engraving give anidea of the forest in which these monuments are buried.
