The reception hall is hung withportraits of former rulers and an especially finepicture of the Emperor of Austria and his beautifulEmpress, Elizabeth. The floors are covered withsplendid rugs from Persia and India, and there arepriceless treasures of ebony, ivory, lacquer-work,gold and silver, among them two chairs made ofsilver dragons with glittering scales and studdedwith jewels, a gift from Queen Victoria. With his retinue, a few dignified Arabs, and Mr.Ellis, his English aide-de-camp, the Sultan receivedus.
