Patrin was on the top, andcame off practically unhurt, but the prisoner, who hadalready been pounded and mauled, had several ribs broken. All through his term the man had been very recalcitrant, and during the spring of 1901 he seized the revolver ofone of the soldiers on duty and shot him.
