coatin winter a short petticoat of seal-skin. In summer theygo bare-footed, except on journeys when, as in winter, they use mocassins of seal-skin, the hair on the outsideof the leg portion only. For underclothing, a ta-pu shirt, shorts, and longgaiters, or spatter-dashes, like the Chinese, are worn bythe men ; and by the women long gaiters only, and ashirt or two of cotton or fish-skin. The outer tunic ofthe Gilyak woman, or rather frock, for it possesses sleeves, has Chinese cash coins strung round the border, whichreaches just below the knees. The Gilyaks are veritable children of the forest, findingtheir home, food, and gods therein. Cultivation of thesoil is unknown to them, and they live mainly on fish andthe flesh of beasts that fall to their snares. By barteringthe skins of such animals they obtain tobacco, brick-tea,etc. They have both summer and winter dwellings, * Salmon (Salmo lagocephalns and S. proteus, which are knownin Eastern Siberia as kita and gorbusha respectively).

He was on a survey party, and inthe forest they came one day upon a solitary Indian, whohad evidently strayed far from his home. They said, Why, you are lost! No, he replied, me no lost, wigwam lost. Their preparations did not include P. and O. overlandtrunks or hat-cases, familiarly labelled Not Wanted, butsimply a seals stomach filled with oil, a scraggy bit ofdried fish, a few leaves of tobacco, an old double-barrelledfowling-
