a dunnage bag for his spare clothing, his towelsand his toilet articles. When we had loadedeverything into the canoe it was well filled in themiddle without crowding the ends which werereserved for ourselves, one at the stern and theother at the bow. I forgot to mention a supplyof matches, and also that each of us providedhimself with a match box consisting of a twelvebore brass shell slipped into a ten bore shell.This is the best possible box for carrying matchesin the pocket. Our sleeping gear consisted of apair of double blankets. The outfit was com-pleted by a canvas tarpaulin big enough to coverthe cargo of the canoe completely. The boxcontaining the dry plates was always kept rolledin a sheet of oiled duck. A bag made of Italiancloth enabled me to change the plates in theholders in the daylight.
