housandsof slips bearing the original signatures of the em-ployees were securely sealed in a metal box and placedin the corner stone. After the fund had been collected, Mr. DanielChester French, of New York, was commissioned toexecute the bronze statue of Mr. Spencer, and Mr.Henry Bacon was employed to design its pedestal.The beautiful monument as it stands today bears tes-timony to the wisdom of the selection of these menas sculptor and architect. The monument having been completed and placedin position, arrangements were made for unveiling iton May 21, 1910. Invitations in the following formwere sent to railway officers and other prominent citi-zens of the United States : (17) IN MEMORIAMSAMUEL SPENCER The Employees of the Southern Railway Company request the honor of your presence at the Unveiling of the Monument to Samuel Spencer First President of the Company at the Terminal Station Atlanta, Georgia Saturday afternoon, May twenty-first nineteen hundred and ten at two oclock.
