good bandwas playing during the evening, and at 1 a. m. we leftfor Abo, the former capital of Finland. The approachto this delightful town is beautiful beyond all exaggera-tion. It is the great summer resort for wealthy Eussians,the numerous islands through which we passed being dottedhere and there with beautiful residences. The approachto Aboby sea has been compared to a journey throughthe Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence Eiver. To meit was even more beautiful than that famous resort; thescenery is more varied and grander. Our boat threaded its way skilfully between thedifferent islands, which presented constant delightfulsurprises. The navigation is difficult at times andrequires experienced sailors. Abo itself is a quaint oldtown, situated about three miles from the sea, at apoint where the waters of the Gulf of Bothnia are lostin the Baltic. Early in the present century Abo waswrested from Sweden by overwhelming Russian force,and has ever since been a Russian town. The popu-

The leaning of the people of Abo is distinctly Swedish,and the Russian Government recognised this fact in remov-ing the capital to Helsingfors. Abo carries on quite vigorous-ly the trade of shipbuilding, and has besides her fisheriesseveral large sugar refineries and cotton factories. Thepopulation is very prosperous, and has those simple, pleas-ing manners so common among the Swedes. The sightsof Abo are limited, consisting, as in most European towns,of one fine cathedral, which, by the way, is said to havebeen the very first Christian temple raised in this north-ern land. It is the seat of an archbishopric. Besidesthis there are several smaller churches and the customarypublic buildings. And this was our farewell to Eussia.
