shameless to behold, a fragment of decorative relieffrom Jacopa della Quercias tomb of Ilaria in thecathedral at Lucca. Some of the desecration of thatloveliest of tombs has been repaired by the tardyreturn, through the intervention of the good queen-mother of Italy, of the reliefs ravished from the endsof the sarcophagus, but Florence still has the hardi-hood to retain this purchased fragment. It is difficult in such wealth of achievement to at-tempt to call attention to any particular pieces, but Imay mention Verrocchios speaking relief for thetomb of Francesca Tornabuoni and the Ecce Homo,and two nearby reliefs of Matteo Civitali, that raresculptor of Lucca whose work is seen so little out-side of his native city. Then there is AntonioRossellinos marble tondo of the Adoration withits beautifully detailed background, the sheep andcow and shed and trees, a complete landscape.Also I must mention Benedetto da Maianos Johnthe Baptist, and Jacopo Sansovinos Bacchus, andCellinis Ganymede.
