Notes Wooden boards. Stamp features the coat of arms of Wittenberg. 6 raised double bands (top and tail band incorporates end bands). Macchi states; bound during the last quarter of the 16th century in Tübingen by a Samuel Streler successor?. The panel stamp appears in Tübingen in several variants. Ilse Schunke considers a variant the work of Samuel Streler whose name was recorded at Tübingen university in 1550 and who worked for Duke Christoph. His activity is certified until 1577, but his workshop was active until 1618. Similar panel-stamp bindings are kept in: 1) Berlin, National Library (A. Schmidt, Bucheinbände aus dem 14.-19. Jahrhundert, pl. XLVIII, p. 23, fig. 74 on Handlungen Des Allgemeinen Concilumbs Wolches gehalten worden vber dem Span..., Tübingen, Georg Gruppenbach, 1582; Idem, p. 24, pl. XLIX, fig. 76 on Hieronymi Cardani Mediolanensis medici de vtilitate ex adversis capienda, libri III, Basileae, per Henricvm Petri, 1561; 2) München, National Library on Michael Maestlin, Ephemerides novae, Tübingen, 1580, shelfmark 4° Eph. astr. 67 (F. Geldner, Bucheinbände aus elf Jahrhunderten, pl. LXVI, fig. 92); 3) Rome, Biblioteca Angelica on Martin Crusius, Civitas coelestis seu Catecheticae conciones, Tubingae, apud Georgium Gruppenbachium, 1587, shelfmark o.4.33 Ludwig III coat-of-arm (Biblioteca Angelica, Roma, Legature di pregio, p. 48. n. 22); 4) Schweinfurt, Municipal Library (M. Hahn, Schweinfurts Drucker, Buchbinder und Buchhändler, col. 643, pl. 22). For further bibliography, see: A. von Arnim, Einbandkunst, n. 67 on Abraham Buchholzer, Chronologia, Görlitz, A. Schunke, Studien zum Bilderschmuck, p. 72 (Samuel Streler). Another version produced in Lauingen by Hans Wagner in 1582 is recorded (Antiquariat Konrad Meuschel, Bad Honnef am Rhein, Seltene Bücher, p. 16-17, n. 20 on Cicero, De officis. De senectute. De amicitia. Paradoxa. Somniun Scipionis, Basel, ex officina Herwagiana, 1584; L. Gruel, Manuel historique et bibliographique, 1905, p. 172-173; K. Haebler, Rollen- und Plattenstempel, H. W. M. von Arnim (Einbände, n. 46, on Martin Luther, Ein einfeltige weise zu beten, für einen guten Freund, Leipzig, Valentin Baptist, 1551) informs about a similar panel-stamp to be seen on a cover binding bound in Saxony
