Improving the Harvest During Drought

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: California was affected by a historic drought from 2011-2016. When faced with a water shortage, agricultural land in California’s Central Valley that remains unplanted, or “fallow,” tends to increase markedly because farmers are unable to fully irrigate their crops. Working with the California Department of Water Resources, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other state and federal agencies, a NASA Earth Science Applied Sciences team applied Earth observations to the USDA’s Cropland Data Layer (CDL) data. By applying this data to within-season mapping of fallowed agricultural lands from March to September 2014, the results produced maps depicting crop development on more than 200,000 fields in the Central Valley. The monthly data revealed that peak 2014 summer acreage of land idled (due to drought effects as well as market conditions, normal agronomic practices, and other factors) was 1.8 million acres—550,000 acres more than in 2011; the most recent year with average or above-average precipitation across the state.
