Escaping fi:-om their hospitality withsome difiiculty, on the plea of the shortness of thetime and the length of the way back, the Englishlady accepted a little loaf, for which no sort of pay-ment would be heard of, and walked with a lightheart back to the station, feeling how close is thereligious tie which binds Catholics together as onefamily, and how beautiful is the hearty, simple hos-pitality of the Spanish people when untainted bycontact with modern innovations and so-called pro-gress. There was no occasion when this natural,high-bred courtesy was not shown during the fourmonths that our travellers spent in this country ;and those who, like the author of Over the Pyre-nees into Spain, find fault on every occasion withthe manners of the people, must either have beenignorant of their language and customs, or, havingno sympathy with their faith, have wounded theirsusceptibilities, and to a certain degree justified therudeness of which they pretend.to have been thevictims.

JVesf Door of Cathedral of Avila. AVILA. 227 CHAPTEK XI. AVILA AND ALVA. After a clean and plentiful breakfast in thecottage, our party started by train for Avila,where they arrived at one oclock ; and havingwashed and dressed, found themselves at vespersat the cathedral, which is a beautiful Gothic build-ing, begun in 1107, with a glorious western facade,. a very fine circular apse at the east end, grandmonuments, and magnificent painted glass. The retablo over the high altar is in better taste thanalmost any in Spain, and contains some beauti-fiilly caiwed subjects, especially one of the An-nunciation. Both this cathedral and the clois-ters are built of a peculiar shaded red and whitegranite, unlike any other, but which gives ratherthe efiect of the cathedral of Sienna. Aftervespers, some of the party went to the arch-bishops, who was absent on a confirmation tour,but had left orders that they should be received,boarded, and lodged at his palace, and had desired O 2 228 AVILA. his y
