At the station theywere met by the kind and obliging Englishconsul, who had ordered rooms for them at thehotel called the Alameda, pleasantly situated onthe promenade, and who had done everything inhis power to ensure their comfort. The first daysof their arrival were spent in settling themselvesin their new quarters, which required a good dealof preliminary cleaning, and in seeing the so-called lions of the place. These are soon visited.In truth, except for climate, Malaga is as dulland uninteresting a place as can be well ima-gined. There is a cathedral, originally a mosque,but now converted into an ugly Corinthian pilewith two towers. Only one fine old Gothic doorremains, with curious azulejos. The rest, bothinside and out, is modern, heavy, and in bad taste.The high altar, however, is by Alonso Cano; andthere is some fine wood-carving of the sixteenthcentury in the choir and on the screen, com-memorating different scenes in the life of St.

MALAGA. 49 Turibins, Archbishop of Lima, whose apostoliclabours among the Indians were crowned withsuch wonderful success. There are one or twogood pictures and monuments, especially therecumbent figure of a bishop, in bronze, of thefifteenth century. In the sacristy is a valuablerelic of St. Sebastian, and some fine silver vasesfor the holy oils; but everything else was plun-dered by the French. Afterwards our travellerswent, with an order fiom the governor, to see thecastle and Moorish fortress overlooking the town,built in 1279. Passing under a fine Moorishhorse-shoe arched gateway, they scrambled up tothe keep, fi-om whence there is a magnificentview over sea and land. It is now used as amilitary prison, and about twenty-six men wereconfined there. The officers were extremely civil,and showed them everything. The mens bar-racks seemed clean and comfortable, and theirrations good; their arms and knapsacks were,however, of the most old-fashioned kind. Thatday a detachment of troops
