Text Appearing Before Image: ount of play at the endsof the stretcher, in order that they may be drawn closerto each other on either side of the stretcher when the saw istightened. At one end of each side-arm there is a roundhole, through which passes a well-fitting jpeg with a handle. This pegis sawn through the middle length-wise to form a slot for the saw blade, which often extends a certain lengthinto the handle. The blade of thesaw is narrower at the ends where itenters the handle. In it are one ortwo holes, through which the fasten-ing pin runs. Blades fastened in this way oftentwist when tightened, and conse-quently cut badly. This happensespecially when the axis of the handleis not exactly in line with the blade. This defect may be remedied by sub-stituting for prolongations of theblade itself, the white-iron attach-ments (Fig. 39), and securing them inthe usual way. The ends of theblade are fastened between the platesof the attachment merely by a screwor nail, in order that the blade maybe freely adjusted. Text Appearing After Image: Fig. 38. The side-arms are connected at the other end by severalstrands of strong string, which are twisted together by atightener, in order to give the required tension to the blade. When the string is put on, the frame is fastened between the bench pegs. The stretcher is made of fir or pine; the side-arms of harderwood, e.g., beech or oak. The different parts of the frameare made as light as is compatible with strength, that thesaw may not be too heavy to manage with one hand.
