Text Appearing After Image: TowE]: ov \ Hill near Rei THE MASSIVE RAMPARTS 435 wall,^ exterior to the city-rampart, connects the height on whichthe first great citadel stands, with another rocky projection of themountain, where every tenable spot has been strongly guarded byoutworks,^ linking themselves across the gorge of a deep ravine tothe side of a third citadel, or fortress, finely built of stone and onthe summit of an immense rock which commands the open countryto the south. ^ Some idea of the size and sweep of the massive rampartsmay be gathered from my photographs. In several places themoldering walls are fully fifty feet high, and the sun-driedbricks which composed them cau still be seen plainly in outline,and they reminded me of the bricks used in the old Zoroastrianfire-temple near Isfahan, although somewhat larger, sincesome of the specimens measured 17 by 7 inches (44 by 18 cm.)along the face.* I was afterward told in Teheran that theyare known as Gabar bricks, a designation that would seemto confir
