The plan of this sumptuous and mighty erection, at once palace and fortress, reveals thewonderful conceptions and the equally wonderful resources of Edward I. As it stood whenfinished, although not equal to Caerphilly in extent, or to Carnarvon in grace and elegance,it was a stupendous and truly magnificent creation.
