Text Appearing Before Image: is, wherecivilisation was on a lower plane, and where Buddhistic ideas were veryprevalent, less fastidiousness was shown. The Sakais, who like the Semangs are very small people, unlike themare fair in complexion, oftenfairer than Malays. Theirorigin is evidently a mixedone. They are not serfs of theMalays but practise agricultureon a fairly extensive scale,though with very primitiveappliances, in the mountains,as far as possible from theMalays, who have alwayslooked upon them as a legiti-mate prey. The Governmentof the Federated Malay Statestacitly recognises them as lordsof the soil, permitting them towork tin-mines and to gatherjungle produce without alicence; but they are muchexploited by Chinamen, andeven, it is said, by unscrupu-lous Europeans. Intermarriage between Europeans and the indigenous races is rare,and there is in the peninsula no such body of half-castes as is found insome parts of the Dutch East Indies. It is only in a few localities,especially in Malacca (now a place of no importance), that Malay half-castesare commonly met with.
