The trouble was remedied by using low-voltage release trip coils operated by gravity. Thecircuit is not opened on this type of relay, but a coilof low resistance is short-circuited by the relay contacts,the coil being in series with a high resistance. The Denver Tramway is making use of a 50-ft.Westinghouse air compressor, mounted on skids for sup-plying air for track tamping. The compressor is motordriven from the trolley supply current and is of suffi-cient capacity to take care of four tampers at a time.The company has been using two tampers and hasbeen able to accomplish as much work with the twomen as twelve men could do with manual tamping. Inorder to offset any objections on the part of the labor-ers, men operating air tampers are paid 25 cents anhour, while 22V2 cents an hour is the rate for the ordi-nary manual tamping work. The operator in charge ofthe machine is paid 30 cents an hour.

Street Railway In street paving work done by the Austin StreetRailway during the last few years, we have noticed thatthe brick and wood blocks placed in and around thespecial work have a tendency to work loose. This al-lows water to get in and the pavement soon deterioratesand becomes very unsightly. Paving at such points, ofcourse, receives very hard usage on account of the vibra-tion of the rolling stock and because of the hammeringof wagon and truck wheels as they pass over the trackwork. During the last year our company has paved 3%miles of track in which all switches and frogs were in-cased in a 1:2 mixture of concrete with proper reinforc-ing. These blocks of concrete are made from 5 to 6 ft.long and brought up to within % in. of the top of therail in all four angles of the frogs and in the acuteangle back of the switch and the mate.
