Text Appearing Before Image: succulent plant, forming stiff erectstems about 6 inches high, clothed by imbricated spathulateleaves, with an almost circular base attached to the stem only byone bundle of fibro-vascular tissue. The flowers are in stiff closeerect racemes, shorter than the lower bracts, which resemble inform the leaves, but taper less to the base. Sepals 5, longerthan the pedicel, equal, linear, acuminate, rather shorter thanthe corolla, which forms a scarlet five-sided pyramid, openingvery slightly at the end into 5 acuminate lobes. Of the 10stamens, 5 stand in furrows of the petals, and 5 are distinct. This is evidently an Echeveria, as De Candolle surmised,and not a Sedum. During the summer it does very well onrockwork out of doors, but it is probable that it should be treated * E. quitensis; omnibus partibus nuda, caulibus imbi-icatim foliosis, foliisspathulatis apiculatis, sepalis lincaribus aciitissimis aiqualibus suberectiscorolla subclavisJi brcvioribus.—J. KTC, as a greenliouse shrubby succulent plant, requiring tlie samekind of soil and treatment as Eclieverias. It is easily increasedby cuttings, and seeds, which it ripens abundantly. When grown out of doors, though pretty, it is not a verystriking plant. It flowers in August. How it will look in agreenhouse is not ascertained as yet. 7. Gaura Lindheimeri. Engelmann, in Boston Journal ofNatural History, Vol. V. p. 217. Vilmorin, in RevueHorticole, 3. ser. V. 41. t. 5. Raised from seeds received from M. Vilmorin in April,1850. A branching herbaceous plant, growing from 3 to 4 feet high,and producing an abundance of gay white and reddish flowersduring all the latter part of the year. The branches are long, rod-like, naked except at the extremities where the flowers grow.The lower leaves are deeply divided in a pinnatifid or sinuatemanner ; the upper are lanceolate and slightly toothed, the upper-most of all are linear-lanceolate and entire.
