In M we see a captive with his arms tied behind him to the stick. In yh we see a captive tied to the stick by the neck, and his arms tied behind his back ; in thisattitude his head was cut off, as we see from the hiero- glyph r^ . Another form of torture which was applied to the enemies of Osiris is also given in the Book ofGates (Division VIII). Here we see a group of captiveswho are called Kheftiu Asar butchiu,^ i.e., the enemiesof Osiris who are to be burnt. Their arms are tiedacross their bodies and behind their backs in positionswhich cause intense pain, and they are doomed to standand receive in their faces the fire which the serpent Kheti 1 Lepsius, Letters, p. 200. 2 The sculptor has made the top of the stick in the form of thehead of Anubis. \°^J^^11^f| Osiris and Human Sacrifice 207
