Text Appearing After Image: Temples on the banks of the Ganges, Benares A Glance at Hinduism 165 gantic size, as the one near the Well of Knowledge inthe city of Benares; others are small. Some are keptin public-places, and others in temples and privatehouses. A queen who lived near our mission in India, reali-zing that her end was near, had brought to her side herfavorite cow, and taking its tail in her hand passedquietly and contentedly into the spirit land. Motherhood is the one great thing to be desiredon the part of a wife in India; and no disgrace,scarcely, is greater than that of being childless. Suchwomen are taught that if they perform a proper wor-ship at the shrine of Mahadab they may becomemothers. There are many things in connection withthe worship of this image of which I cannot speak,for with our ideas of decency they would be consideredobscene in the extreme.
