Text Appearing Before Image: Give us schools and Englishteachers and we will do the rest. We all agreedthat our reception on sea and land had been themost spectacular of our lives. We took lunch atmilitary headquarters, and an informal receptionwas held later in the provincial building. At 3 :30 a public session was held of the usualcharacter. Here, however, as the mass of thosepresent spoke only Tagalog, the speeches were inter-preted into that language by Sefior Calderon. Thebanquet that evening was one of the largest we haveattended, there being a greater representation ofwomen present than usual. A few speeches weremade, after which we adjourned to the town hall,where a baile was in progress. It was a lively scene,everyone seeming to enter into the spirit of the occa-sion. Mr. LeRoy and I had been assigned to aFilipino family, where we showed up shortly aftermidnight. One of the native bands was also quar-tered there, its members, together with the family,being stretched out on the floor. Perhaps somepeople, reading the States papers, would have con-sidered it reckless for two unarmed Americans tosleep alone under such circumstances. We sleptwell, however, despite the hard beds and harderpillows. These native pillows seem stuffed withsawdust or something equally hard. Our breakfastwas served in the room next morning, the bandplaying meanwhile in the adjoining room. The closing session was held this morning, andwe had another splendid talk by Chief Justice Arel-lano, who is a native of the province. Anothertiffin — really a dinner — was eaten, with morespeeches. We were then escorted to the bay shoreby most of the populace and by the military, andthen to our launch and onward by the fleet of bancas.
