Cutting-gauge;compass;bevel; square;dove-tail saw;marking-point; firmerchisel. Square; com-pass; firmerchisel;smoothing-plane. 1. The tenon (Aa) and (Ba) and the slot (Bb) are set out with the square and the mortise-gauge. 2. The slot (Bb) is cut down with the tenon (or dove-tail) saw, and cut out with a coarse firmer chisel (or mortise-chisel), by aid of the mallet. 3. The tenon (Ba) is made with the tenon (or dove-tail) saw and the firmer chisel. It is called a shoulder tenon.The tenon (Aa) is simply fitted into the slot with thesmoothing-plane. It is called an unshouldered tenon. 4. The parts are fitted together, and, if necessary, the firmer chisel is used. For method of execution see Ex. No. 58 ; but note that stillgreater accuracy is required, because exercises with thesaw and the firmer chisel are always more difficultwhen the thickness of the wood eithe
