If the bradawl is not chisel-pointed, as shown on page 112,Fig. 75, it is simply pressed into the wood and workedround and round; but if it is chisel-pointed it shouldbe pressed in with the point across the fibres to avoidsplitting. 1. The punch is held steadily on the head of the nail, andstruck sharply with the hammer; otherwise it mayslip aside and make disfiguriag holes in the work. The article is screwed into the bench, and the tool, heldfirmly by both handles, is worked steadily over thewood. The exercise is rendered considerably easier ifthe draw-knife is held obliquely, i.e., if the one end issomewhat in advance of the other. If contrary woodis encountered, the work should, if possible, be turnedto allow the knife to cut in the direction of the fibres.[The face of the tool should be held towards theworker, with the bevelled edge on the work.] For method of execution see Ex.
