Text Appearing Before Image: d for marking out thesize of the plug, and the fitting is done with the knifeand chisel. The exercise is performed according to the directions givenin Ex. No. 17, with this exception, that the work is laidflat on the bench, and the plane is held obliquely atthe angle required. See Fig. 102. See Chap. IV., pp. 121, 122. If the bradawl is not chisel-pointed, as shown on page 112,Fig. 75, it is simply pressed into the wood and workedround and round; but if it is chisel-pointed it shouldbe pressed in with the point across the fibres to avoidsplitting. 1. If the plate, etc., is to be sunk, the firmer chisel is used. 2. The plate is screwed on with the screw-driver, care being taken that the screw passes right down into the wood. See jointing. Chapter IV., pp. 123, 124. 152 Name of Exercise ^ H Purpose and Description of Exercise. 43 44 Punching. Bevelling withthe clraiu-knife. To sink a nail-head below the surface ofthe wood. To produce a broad bevel in the samedirection as the fibres run.

Text Appearing After Image: 45 46 Perpendiculargouging. Plain jointing. To produce a concave excavation, perpen-dicular to a plane surface. To plane pieces of wood intended to bejointed by glueing. 153 Tools required. Directions for Work. Punch, hammer. Draw-knife. Gouge withedge on theconvex side. Trying-plane. The punch is held steadily on the head of the nail, andstruck sharply with the hammer; otherwise it mayslip aside and make disfiguriag holes in the work. The article is screwed into the bench, and the tool, heldfirmly by both handles, is worked steadily over thewood. The exercise is rendered considerably easier ifthe draw-knife is held obliquely, i.e., if the one end issomewhat in advance of the other. If contrary woodis encountered, the work should, if possible, be turnedto allow the knife to cut in the direction of the fibres.[The face of the tool should be held towards theworker, with the bevelled edge on the work.] For method of execution see Ex. No. 24. The greatest care is required in plain jointin
