Text Appearing After Image: Agouti {Dasyprocta a^uti). The American name of several species of rodentmammals of the genus Dasijprocta and familyDasyproefido. The common agouti, or yellow-rumpedcavy! />. (igouti, is of the size of a rabbit. The upper partof the body is brownish, with a mixture of red and black;the belly yellowish. Three varieties are mentioned, allpeculiar to South America and the West Indies. It bur-rows in the ground or in hollow trees, lives on vegetables,doing much injury to the sugar-cane, is as voracious as apig, and makes a similar grunting noise. It holds its foodin its fore paws, like a squirrel. When scared or angryits hair becomes erect, and it strikes the ground with itshind feet.
