Text Appearing Before Image: e Engineering Record of the samedate, has confirmed many in the opinion that this wasa new factor in the solution of the paving problemalthough the test of time is yet to be applied. The former bituminous or tar pavements haveusually been formed of sand the fine grains of whichhave no other stability or structural strength than isderived from the matrix of asphalt or of coal-tar inwhich they are embedded: or they have consisted oftarred fragments of stone with twenty per cent or moreof void spaces, generally placed without systematicheating and mixing. The new pavement is formed of trap rock, or othertough rock, crushed and screened to fragments varyingin size from two inches down to the dust, and com-bined in such proportion of sizes that the final spacesbetween the fragments of rock do not exceed ten percent. This means that the fragments must be in actualand firm contact with each other and that the additionof ten or twelve per cent, by bulk, of bituminous com- BITULITHIC PAVEMENT.
