Theyare occasionally found in houses,amongst books, etc., and several specieshave been found on merchant-ships;not uncommonly specimens may bemet wdth clinging to the legs of flies orbeneath the wing-cases of beetles. Oneof the British species (Ohisiaiii )iiari- iininni) is found under stones or beneath seaweed below high-watermark. Their food consists of mites or small insects. At thebreeding season the female envelops herself and her eggs, whichshe attaches to the under side of her body, in a spacious silkencell. A similar cell is spun as a protection whilst the animal ismoulting and during iiibernation. The earliest-known fossil forms of Pseudoscorpions are fromaml)er deposits of Oligocene age. x\t the present day the groupis distributed all over the temperate and tropical countries of theworld. It is divisible into two sub-orders: (1) Pancfenodacii/ti,(2) Hcmictenodactyli. Drawings illustrating the main points ofdifference between these sub-orders are placed in Table-case 24.

Table-case The members of this sub-order have the first appendage ofNo. 24. small size, and the serrula of the movable finger is fused through-out its length to the finger. There are three families: (1) Garypidae, (2) FeaeUidac, (3)Chclifcridae. Specimens of a large species of Chelifer from SierraLeone are exhibited in Case 24. Sub-order II.—HEMICTENODACTYLI. The first pair of appendages of the Hcmictcnodactyli is of largesize, and at least the distal end of the serrula of the movablefinger is free. There are two families: (1) Chthoniidac, (2) Ohisiidae. Order 7.—Podogona. Owing to a close, but superficial resemblance to certain speciesof Opiliones the Podogona were regarded, until quite recently, as forming part of that order.
