4 And they worshipped the dragonwhich gave powerunto the beast: andthey worshipped thebeast, saying, Who islike unto the beast ?who is able to makewar with him ? All the Roman world; wondered af-ter the beast. Thus they virtually worship-ped the dragon, by submitting without re-serve, to tlie same idolatrous, persecutingpower as before, only in another form. Itmust ever be borne in mind that the beastwhich rises out of the sea, to which thisdragon first gave his seat and power, is thesecular Roman beast, corresponding withDaniels terrible beast. Papal Rome, an-swering to the little horn of Diniers beast,is another power to be described in the nextSection. Compare Dan. vii—7, with thesepassages, and Rev. xvii. A right under-standing of the distinction between the sec-ular and papal powers of Rome, is essentialto every reader. Although these powersacted in concert, they exercised distinctfunctions. 31* 366 ILLUSTRATIONS OF PROPHECY,

This beast was without a name, like thefourth in Daniel, which symbolized thesame empire. (See page 55, Sect ii.) Dan-iels fourth beast, which was dreadful andterrible, with its little horn, comprehendedall which is symbolized by the dragon, thisbeast, the ten-horned beast yet to be de-scribed, the image of the beast, and the wo-man sitting on this beast, (chap, xvii.)When the persecuting power denoted bythis beast, arose, it was to be expected thatthe devil would transfer the authority hith-erto lodged with his pagan vicegerent, thedragon, to this beast. War of the beast. 36t 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God,to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and themthat dwell in heaven. 7 And it was given unto him to make war with thesaints, and to overcome them: and power was givenhim over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. 8 And
