f its form it is more graceful than the species of the genus Ca-thartes, approaching in this respect also the genus Gypaetos, of which theVultur barbatus of authors is the type. In a living state it has a very strong smell,partaking of the flavour of its corrupted food; and when killed, it pu-trefies very rapidly. It is common in Spain, in Turkey, and throughoutthe Archipelago; but Africa appears to be the country most congenial toits economy. It is said to breed in caverns and the clefts of rocks, butthe number and colour of its eggs have not been ascertained. Its cryis seldom heard ; and when at rest it generally sits upon the ground. .■54
