urface, give a beautiful marble effect that atonce attracts the eye of the observer. These columns havecores of steel, on which the great weight of the entire buildingrests. The pedestals are of skyros marble, and the caps are ofplaster, made to resemble the bronze effect that is in evidencethroughout the interior. The ceiling is finished in ornamentalplaster work, old ivory in tint, artistic and delicate in design.There are three electric elevators in the front of the building,two of which take passengers to the twelfth floor, and the othergoes to the restaurant on the roof. Above the mezzanine floorthe remainder of the building contains 209 offices. From therestaurant on the fourteenth floor, visitors may obtain an idealview of the city and surrounding country. Directly opposite the National Bank of Commerce is theSt. Denis Hotel and Cafe. Turning to the right into MainStreet, and proceeding toward Granby, you pass the NorfolkNational Bank, an old and powerful financial institution.

42 A TOUR OF NORFOLK AND PORTSMOUTH 43 A little further on is the Academy of Music, Norfolks oldesttheater, and diagonally across the street is the Y. M. C. A.Adjoining this is the modern 7-story fire-proof Citizens Bank andoffice building. The exterior walls are of buff brick, with terracotta trimmings. The first floor is occupied by the large andperfectly equipped counting roc^gt and various departments ofthe Citizens Bank, one of the oMfest and foremost institutionsof its kind in this city. To the left- of the banking departmentis a large entrance and lobby, where elevators lead to the upperfloors and business offices. On the roof of this building islocated the U. S. Weather Bureau signal tower and U. S. timeball. Next to the Citizens Bank, and almost at the foot of GranbyStreet, stands the U. S. Custom House, an imposing 3-storystone building of colonial design.
