a finger. The passenger expressed much surprise andsome indignation at such a question, and the con-ductor, perhaps, thought it prudent to keep his sus-picions to himself. In October, just before moving 432 FRANK AKB JESSE JAMES. to St. Joseph, Jesse paid a farewell visit to theSamuels place, and there he met Charley Ford, whosaid that he was fleeing from the officers, and askedto be protected. This appeal to the outlaws gener-osity was not made in vain. He replied that theFords had frequently protected him, and that hewould befriend them; that he was going to St.Joseph shortly, and there Charley Ford should besheltered and live safely under his roof. The plotto murder Jesse James had already been formed be-tween Charley and Bob Ford; and the story justmentioned was concocted simply that one of theassassins might be a spy upon his movements, whilethe other perfected the remaining details. Jesse saw no imminent danger in remaining atKansas City, but he knew the officials were on theale
