ound this station, though low andlevel, is covered with a noble forest-growth, among whichis found the huge cedro-tree, from which the native hollowsout his canoe, sometimes of fifteen or twenty tons burthen;its broad, plane-shaped roots extend out on every side likebuttresses, and its trunk towers up, without a branch, for ahundred feet, supporting a canopy of foliage often fiftyyards in diameter. A short distance from the station,close to the left side of the track, is one called StephenssTree, not less than five or six yards in diameter at itsbase. A luxuriant growth of vines decorates its trunk,and, winding out upon its branches, hangs down like athickly-woven curtain to the lesser growth beneath. Itstrunk is studded with parasites, and usually fine specimensof the Orchidaceae may be seen blooming among its foliage.Several varieties of mahogany are also found here, andoccasionally the lignum-vitse-tree; the most of the trees,however, are only known by local names, which can convey
