It has water communication east andwest to many important centres, to tide water and to morethan one-half the way across the continent. Central Ontarioia the most highly cultivated portion of the Dominion ofCanada, but in the wide expanse of its northern portionand westward along the Great Lakes, and even to theboundaries of Manitoba, new settlements, towns and vil-lages are constantly springing up, and new avenues of com-merce being opened up as the resources of these districtsbecome more fully known. The construction of a newCanadian Transcontinental railway from the Atlantic to thePacific Coast will largely increase the sphere of Torontoscommercial influence, while the facilities for cheap lakenavigation from Ontario ports, give to the city an assur-ance of continued and increasing supremacy in the controlof the wholesale trade of New Ontario, Manitoba and theNorth-West Territories.

Public Buildings.—Toronto probably contains as manyfine public buildings as any city of its size in the world. 22 Among these may be mentioned the Union Depot, whichcost over a million dollars; the City and County Hall,which is one of the finest in the world ; the Temple Build-ing, the home of the I. O. F.; the Confederation LifeBuilding, Canada Life Building, the Parliament Buildings,University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall, Normal School, UpperCanada College, Trinity University, Knox College, GeneralHospital, Public Library, and many others of which lackof space forbids mention. Government.—The government of the city is vested ina Council consisting of a Mayor, four Controllers andtwenty Aldermen. The Mayor and Controllers are electedannually from a vote of the entire city.
