Average Annual Rainfall in Illinois.23 ILLINOIS HISTORY STORIES Illinois that is crossed by two of these storm routes untilwe reach New England. This will help us to under-stand why Illinois has such a variety of weather andperhaps more sudden changes of temperature than anyother state in the Union. We should examine, also, two other charts, one show-ing the average temperature and the other the averagerainfall for the state. In all such charts the same tem-perature is represented by very crooked lines. Thealtitude, the conformation of the drainage basins, theforests and prairies and the amount of rainfall all havean influence upon the temperature. Hardly any twoplaces are exactly alike in these respects, so we shouldnot expect to find many places alike in temperaturerecords. In the extreme northern part of the state theaverage temperature is forty-six degrees, while in theextreme south it is fifty-eight degrees.
