ators exercising uncontested sway over thecounty, caught a number of suspicious characters and tried them bycommittee, whipping and tarring and feathering those, who had beenconvicted, and taking many of them away as prisoners, of whomseveral were afterwards reported to have gone to Arkansas: bywhich was understood, that they had been drowned in the Ohio, andleft to swim with the current of that river in the direction of Ar-kansas. On the 23d of December, 1846, a convention of regulators 124 HISTORY. from the counties of Johnson, Massac, and Pope, assembled at Gol-conda, ordering the sheriff and the clerk of the county court ofMassac, together with many other citizens, to leave the country withinthirty days. The sheriff and many others accordingly left thecountry, remaining absent all winter. This was the last act of vio-lence on the part of the regulators j the disturbances afterwardsgradually passing away, being destined, like everything else, to cometo an end. ■:, juLiiriJllJllir

The term of office of Governor Thomas Ford, under whose admin-istration, as already mentioned, the condition of the State had beenvery materially ameliorated, having expired in December, 1846, Au-gustus C. French was elected Governor of the State of Illinois; heassumed the reins of government the same month, delivering, on the8th of December, 1846, an inaugural address to the Legislature,wherein he recommends, that all the available means of the State bebrought into such a condition, that they might be applied to the finalpayment of her public debt. Although during his administration thedebt was not further reduced, but even considerably enlarged, it waswhile he was Governor, that Illinois entered, with gigantic strides,upon the road of industry and prosperity, recovering entirely from hersunken position, rapidly increasing in population, and so wonderfullydeveloping her immense resources, that in point of wealth, industry,and enterprise, Illinois now acknowledgedly ranks
