Summary
[edit]DescriptionIllinois and Michigan Canal (5978670984).jpg | Illinois and Michigan Canal in Lockport (1848). The need for a connection between Lake Michigan and the Illinois river had been known since Marquette and Joliet traveled the river. In 1824, Samuel D. Lockwood authorized a survey for a canal. Construction began in 1836, though it was soon delayed due to the Panic of 1837. Irish immigrants came to work on the canal; many had previously worked on the Erie Canal. The Canal was finished in 1848 for a cost around $6.1 million. The canal was deepened in 1871 to speed up the current. When completed, the canal had seventeen locks and four aquaducts to fix the 140-foot difference between Lake Michigan and the Illinois River. It was a very popular passenger and industrial route for the first few years of its existance. However, by 1853, the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad opened. The railroad ran parallel to the canal and provided much faster passenger service. The canal was replaced by the Chicago Sanitary & Ship Canal in 1900, though it continued to see some use until 1933. Today, most of the I&M Canal is a long, thin parkway. It was designated a National Heritage Corridor by the United States Congress in 1984. |
