Description
English: At one time bankrupts, insolvent debtors and bankruptcies were linked to the Custos Iusticiae or the Column of Justice and exposed to the public instead of going to the pillory. This column dates back to the mid-16th century and was erected by the Spanish viceroy Pietro di Toledo who wanted to make the punishment less difficult than the pillory even if the condemned were then placed astride the lion with their backs in the air and their hands tied to the column. An unforgettable moment!
