Igrexa de Santiago, A Coruña. La Fundación de A Coruña (leyendas). Alfonso X el Sabio en el siglo XIII, es el primero que recogió en la Crónica General, la leyenda que cuenta la existencia en estas tierras de un gigante llamado Gerión que tenía aterrorizado a todos sus habitantes. Hércules, hijo del dios Zeus, acude en ayuda de éstos y se enfrenta al gigante durante tres largos días. Tras una dura lucha, Hércules vence y mata a Gerión, le corta la cabeza y sobre ella manda construir una torre conmemorando su victoria. Se dice que la primera persona en habitar esas tierras ya libres fue una mujer llamada Cruña, que daría nombre a la nueva ciudad. Sobre esta misma leyenda hay otra versión en la que cuenta que Gerión era perseguido por Hércules por haber deshonrado a su hermana; el viaje desde la costa gaditana subiendo el atlántico, hasta llegar a un terreno abrupto donde pasó la noche escondido en una cueva. Hércules no cesó en la búsqueda y lo encontró dormitando. Lo despertó y se batieron en una lucha a muerte de la que Hércules resultó vencedor. Para conmemorar su victoria el héroe mandó construir una torre y ordenó tallar en el faro los nombres de las personas que admiraran su obra. La primera mujer se llamó Crunna, y así fue como nació la ciudad de Coruña. |
