O conjunto constituído pela Igreja dos Carmelitas Descalços e pela Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, na Praça de Parada Leitão, Porto, está classificado como monumento nacional por decreto publicado em maio de 2013 em Diário da República. “A implantação geminada de 2 igrejas constitui uma raridade no panorama urbano nacional, constituindo uma cenografia de grande impacto visual na zona nobre do Porto setecentista, marcado pelo espírito do urbanismo iluminista”, sublinha o diploma publicado na Folha Oficial. Esta implantação “permite a oportunidade de observar, lado a lado, 2 edifícios de grande qualidade, ilustrativos da evolução histórica da arte em Portugal”, realça o texto legal. O decreto refere que a Igreja dos Carmelitas Descalços, construída entre 1619 e 1628, representa “um bom exemplo de fachada maneirista erudita, encerrando valioso património retabular barroco e rococó, em notável estado de conservação e integridade”, que inclui um órgão de tubos e um retábulo-mor de José Teixeira Guimarães, grande mestre entalhador da segunda metade do século XVIII. Quanto à Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo, recorda-se que foi erguida entre 1756 e 1768, segundo projecto de Figueiredo Seixas, “nome fundamental da arquitectura nortenha entre o barroco e o neoclássico”, registando depois algumas alterações com o cunho de Nicolau Nasoni. “Trata-se de uma fachada exemplar do barroco pleno, na linha da estética contra-reformista então vigente.
