A igreja-colegiada de Santa Maria da Alcáçova foi fundada nos primeiros anos da segunda metade do século XII, após a conquista de Santarém aos Mouros, e a sua construção teve a iniciativa dos cavaleiros da Ordem do Templo, sob orientação de D. Frei Pedro Arnaldo, cavaleiro templário e comendador de Santarém. Ao longo dos séculos esta igreja, que sediou a primeira freguesia cristã após a tomada da vila, sofreu diversas campanhas de obras que acabaram por ocultar os planos arquitectónicos primitivos, pelo que, hoje, estamos perante uma obra, que no essencial, é fruto das intervenções dos séculos XVII-XVIII e cuja descaracterização mereceu a Almeida Garrett e a Alexandre Herculano palavras de acerbo desdém. Obras recentes de restauro permitiram detectar, sob a estrutura seiscentista, vestígios importantes dos primitivos arcos capitelizados medievais. O templo é de invocação de Santa Maria, "culto em expansão em todo o mundo cristão contemporâneo. Na Península Ibérica, a reconquista cristã adoptou o culto da Virgem no seu santuário uncentista, como expressão simbólica dessa mesma expansão.
