Sem que haja provas documentais, a edificação poderá remontar aos primórdios do burgo (da sua primitiva traça nada foi detectado). Nos meados do século XIII sabemo - lo pelas inquirições afonsinas -, a freguesia de Sta. Maria, sediada muito provavelmente na igreja com o mesmo nome, contava-se entre as quatro do aglomerado. As alterações mais significativas ocorreram ao longo dos séculos XVI, XVII e XVIII: Erigido no terceiro quartel de quinhentos, o corpo do monumento apresenta um interior dividido em três naves por colunas poligonais (construídas em tijolo) que sustentam arcos de meio ponto, modelando o espaço desta igreja-salão; a capela-mor (que deve datar de 1580) e a capela dos Figueiredos (dedicada a N. Sra dos Prazeres) mandada executar, em 1585, por Pero de Figueiredo (alcaide-mor de Bragança); do séc. XVII, refira-se o retábulo dedicado a Sto Estevão e a preciosa e expressiva imagem de Sta. Maria Madalena (altar-mor),obra seiscentista do mestre Gregório Fernandez ou Pedro de Mena, das oficinas de Valladolid; do séc. XVIII provêm muitos elementos decorativos e alguns acrescentos arquitectónicos, como o retábulo barroco da capela-mor e o tecto da nave central que apresenta uma pintura com cenografias de belo efeito, numa linguagem que se aproxima da que foi expressa nas igrejas de S. Clara, S. Bento, S. Francisco (capela de N. Sra. da Conceição) e na capela do antigo Paço Episcopal (hoje Museu do Abade de Baçal); a frontaria, de "tipo retabular", é animada por um portal de feição barroca (1690-1715),em que desempenham papel de relevo as colunas pseudo-salomónicas e os enrolamentos dos frontões.
