Description

Durante o período das Guerras da Restauração (1640), com as lutas em volta das praças fronteiriças que readquiriam a importância perdida, Castro Marim voltou a ter maior incremento que outrora tinha perdido, e com isto a Santa Casa da Misericórdia adquiriu nova importância. Por esta altura levantaram-se outros baluartes, num dos quais havia a Capela de São Sebastião, arrasada aquando das obras do Forte a que deu o nome. Para que a vila não ficasse, então, privada de templo, mandou D. João IV construir uma capela de invocação ao mesmo Santo, no ano de 1650, como dita a inscrição que se sobrepõe ao portal principal que diz: "esta ermida de S. Sebastião mandou fazer el-rei D. João IV por lhe tomar outra pera forte. Anno de 1650."

Este novo templo situado junto a uma das entradas da vila, passou a ser a nova igreja da Misericórdia e a instituição trasladou-se para aí em 1838.

A nova Igreja de São Sebastião ou da Misericórdia pertence a um estilo vernacular da arquitectura religiosa, de planta longitudinal, de fachadas simples de pano único, sem quaisquer motivos decorativos, denunciando a crise em que vivia a corte portuguesa naquela altura. O interior está ricamente decorado por florões, volutas e putti em trompe l'oeil, decorando todas as fachadas interiores, como era uso no século XVII, pintados a têmpera. A capela-mor é simples com cobertura em abóbada de berço, com retábulo de estilo rústico, arcaizante, datável de meados do século XVII, e a E. entrada para a sacristia de construção posterior. <a href="http://www.cm-castromarim.pt/site/index.php?module=ContentExpress&func=display&ceid=27" rel="nofollow">www.cm-castromarim.pt/site/index.php?module=ContentExpres...</a>
