Description

Esta igreja foi construída no séc. XIV, sem dúvida nenhuma, é esta uma das igrejas mais antigas de Castelo de Vide.

Sede de uma das freguesias da vila, sabe-se dela que pertenceu à Ordem de Malta e era Comenda das Freiras da mesma ordem de Estremoz que passam por ter sido as fundadoras da Igreja.

A Igreja de S. João está situada entre Largo C. Salgueiro Maia e o Largo João José Le Cocq.

È constituída por quatro volumes: nave, capela-mor, sacristia e torre sineira.

A nave é rectangular, o tecto é de madeira, de forma trapezoidal. A entrada principal comunica com a nave e faz-se por uma porta que está a um nível superior à plataforma exterior que se ergue a cerca de 5 m acima do nível da rua. A porta é formada por ombreiras e dintel rectos. Lateralmente enquadram-se duas pilastras que terminam em capitel sobre o qual assenta um álamo de que arranca em frontão interrompido. Acima do dintel duplo decorado rasga-se um janelão de arco abaulado, coroado por um frontão, cujo vértice superior é encimado por decoração em ramagens estilizadas, sobrepujadas por um óculo.

A capela-mor é rectangular e a cobertura é em abóbada de berço que arranca de uma pequena cornija.

O pavimento, a meio é sobre-elevado na altura de três degraus, na parede Este abre-se uma porta de acesso à torre sineira e na parede Oeste abre-se a porta de acesso à sacristia.
