Description

Edifício modelo da arquitectura gótica mendicante portuguesa, o Convento de São Domingos foi fundado em 1267 e construído durante o último terço do séc. XIII no local da ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires.

Sofreu várias modificações a partir do séc. XV, no séc. XVII recebeu uma nova fachada ao estilo barroco e no século seguinte as capelas laterais em mármore.

Funcionava em São Domingos não só um convento mas também uma albergaria e um hospício, demolido durante as Guerras da Restauração, porque esta parte do convento coincidia com a construção do novo lanço de muralhas.

A igreja, com uma fachada barroca, mas com um interior gótico é um extraordinário exemplo da arquitectura medieval. Destacam-se a capela-mor e colaterais, do séc. XIII, as capelas laterais do séc. XVIII, a azulejaria setecentista que conta a vida de São Domingos, a sala do capítulo com o seu mobiliário e ainda o grande órgão construído pelo alemão Hulenkampf no séc. XVIII.

Em 1834, após a extinção das ordens monásticas, o que restou do convento foi secularizado ao albergar um quartel militar, e hoje faz parte do Museu Militar de Elvas. <a href="https://www.cm-elvas.pt/descobrir/patrimonio/religioso/igreja-de-sao-domingos/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">www.cm-elvas.pt/descobrir/patrimonio/religioso/igreja-de-...</a>
